The following links can be printed to practice at home. Print 2 copies of each passage. Time your child for one minute. Count the number of words read. Determine how many words your child is able to read in one minute by taking the number of words read and subtracting the number of words read incorrectly or omitted. This will give you a fluency rate (correct words per minute) of your child.
Use the chart below to determine whether or not your child is at risk for poor language and reading outcomes. Use your child's fluency rate (correct words per minute) at the beginning, middle, and end of the year to determine the rate at which your child should be reading.
Beginning of the Year
Month 1-3 0-25: At Risk 26-43: Some Risk 44 and Above : Low Risk |
Middle of the Year
Month 4-6 0-51: At Risk 52-67: Some Risk 68 and Above : Low Risk |
End of the Year
Month 7-10 0-69: At Risk 70-89: Some Risk 90 and Above : Low Risk |
